My Flight Path
Current Coordinates
As I start this course, I realize I use digital tools all the time, but I’ve never really thought about how they affect learning. I’m a fourth-year student at the University of Victoria, studying music performance with a focus on bassoon. My experience with personalized learning comes from private music lessons and practicing on my own. My teacher tailors my lessons to my skill level, what I want to achieve musically, and what I need to work on. I also make my own practice plans and adjust them as I progress. I am curious to explore how digital tools can enhance learning and understanding of the concepts and ideas behind personalized learning. I hope to become a better learner and musician and to use technology in a way that supports my goals.
I use social media and online resources to help me learn music. I watch YouTube videos, listen to recordings, and check out musicians’ social media to hear different versions of pieces and pick up new skills. One thing I want to get better at during this course is building a network of people who can help me learn and grow as a musician. By being more intentional about building this network, I hope to make the most of my time and get the most out of my learning experience.
Mapping the route
I want to learn how to use personalized learning and social media to teach music. My dream is to teach people how to play the bassoon and play in an orchestra. I think digital tools can really improve music education, and I want to explore how to use them in ways that work best for students. By using technology, teachers can give students more choices and flexibility, which can help them learn more effectively.
As I move forward, I want to become more mindful of my online actions and their impact. I also want to make sure I am using online resources fairly and that everyone has equal access to them. I want to be able to look at information, figure out what’s true and what’s not, and take ownership of my learning. By doing this, I will be able to use technology in a way that’s both powerful and responsible.
Anticipating Turbulance
I think the biggest challenge I will face is getting used to new ideas like how people learn, what’s right and wrong online, and who owns what. To make sense of it all, I will try to link these concepts to things I already know from playing and teaching music. I’m also looking forward to talking about it in class, trying out new digital tools, and thinking about how I use the internet.
By the time I finish this course, I want to have a good grasp of how to use digital tools and also understand when and why they’re useful for learning that really matters. I think this will not only help me become a better musician but also make me a more effective music teacher in the future.
